Great article by Tim Reynolds of AP News on how the NBA Coaches are active participants in the demand for social change and racial equality, and how the Coaches are using the NBA restart to keep the conversation going.
Bryan Stevenson is the founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, an NBA community partner, and is someone who has spent 30 years pushing for social justice. He was scheduled to meet with the NBA Coaches over a Zoom call for a half-hour a few weeks ago. The call went more than three times that long, and from there a running dialogue was born.
The NBA Coaches have been proactive about continuing that dialogue in Orlando.
NBA Coaches Association President and Dallas Mavericks Head Coach Rick Carlisle and several other Head Coaches now start their interview sessions by reading from the Equal Justice Initiative calendar that highlights something that happened on that day in the country’s racial history.
NBA Coaches including Toronto Raptors Head Coach Nick Nurse, Orlando Magic Head Coach Steve Clifford, Atlanta Hawks Head Coach Lloyd Pierce, Miami Heat Head Coach Erik Spoelstra, and San Antonio Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich have also continued to use their platforms in Orlando to raise awareness and to continue to educate the larger public on issues of racial injustice through wearing specific apparel, offering educational film viewings such as the documentary John Lewis: Good Trouble, and voicing their opinions to help create lasting and sustainable change.
