Stan Van Gundy recalled his own humble coaching beginnings Tuesday. He had several stops and small schools before landing as an assistant coach at Wisconsin in 1992. And as kind of a salute to those days, the walls at the practice facility on the first practice of training camp were lined with area college coaches, the Detroit Pistons’ personal guests at the start of Van Gundy’s second camp.
“No. 1 is I had the good fortune to be able to do stuff like this when I was a young coach,” Van Gundy said. “I remember driving down from Vermont to New York, to watch Hubie Brown’s Knicks camps, and you learn a lot. So I think you always want to give back and give people a chance to come in and watch. And then, on top of that, this is just another way that we can build relationships with college coaches, and those guys help us a lot, so we need to give back.”
