Great work by NBCA President & Dallas Mavericks Head Coach, Rick Carlisle in using his platform to spread awareness about Black History Month. Before taking questions during his pregame news conference Monday, Carlisle pledged to start every news conference in February with a Black History Month reading; this is similar to his and the other Coaches efforts this summer in Orlando following George Floyd’s death. Monday’s reading covered Carter Goodwin Woodson, an African American Harvard University PhD, who established “Negro History Week,” which ultimately became Black History Month as we know it today. Coach Carlisle and the ‘NBA Coaches for Racial Justice’ committee has helped spearhead a league-wide movement to improve racial equality within each community.
